What rod is best for squid?
What rod is best for squid?
The best fishing rod for squid fishing is a longer, fast action, lightweight trout rod. If I was going to buy a rod specifically for squidding—and I personally wouldn’t—it would be a 7 – 8′, fast action, graphite, 4- to 10-lb-test rated spinning rod. But again, most fishing rods will do just fine.
What are EGI rods?
Egi roughly translated from the Japanese means “squid lure” and that’s what these rods are designed to cast. They have very specific actions, grip lengths and guides. The action of the Egi rod is very specific. It’s unlike a soft plastic rod which tends to fast or extra fast action.
What line do you use for Squidding?
You can use any line, but PE braid is the best, something around 8-10lb is perfect. Leader line should be Fluorocarbon which is abrasion resistant, of the same breaking strength as your main line.
When should I go Squidding?
Squid feed at night and are attracted to light, so it’s easiest to catch them after dark. Go at high tide. Fish like to be in deeper water, where they feel more protected. That means if there’s a high tide, your chances of catching a lot of squid are even higher.
What weight rod do I need for squid?
Preferably around a 3-6kg weight rating and a cast weight of around 25g as it will be used for other species as well (but mostly squid).
How do you pick a squid rod?
When choosing a rod intended for squidding, try to choose a slower tapering rod with a parabolic curve, as this will allow you to work the jig effectively and also handle the unique propulsion of a squid without tearing a tentacle.
Can you use a EGI rod to catch fish?
They are parabolic in action but quite stiff as they are designed to work the jigs back in a very agressive manner. As for using a egi rod for fish, they are pretty crap… not half as sensitive in the tip as normal rods and to be honest they just don’t feel right when working plastics or hardbods.
Do you need a sinker for a squid jig?
These jigs are specifically designed for fishing deep and fast running water. They feature a much larger weight than your regular jig usually around 30g or so. This is the most cost effective solution and it involves tying a small sinker onto your leader line around 400mm or more in front of your jig.
Do I need a leader for squid?
Any old leader will do the job. In saying that, we mainly use flourocarbon between 12 and 16lb in order to avoid losing jigs to weed, rocks etc. You need enough strength to straighten the prongs.
What tide is best for Squidding?
The best seasons are spring and summer. I find that squid tend to be less active when it is very cold. It seems that fishing on the high tide is most productive. Though I personally believe that the weather and water quality on a given day is far more important than the state of the tide.
Can you catch squid in winter?
Winter can be one of the most challenging times to catch squid, which is why we have traditionally released our Egi Special in that season. Winter is when you most need solid information on catching squid and while it may be challenging, it’s also one of the most popular times to target squid.
