Zig zag rolled hem It’s designed this way in order to accommodate a zig zag stitch, because sometimes the kind of fabric we like to finish with a rolled hem is also the kind that frays easily, such as a sheer organza or similar. One of the best ways to combat this is with a zig zag stitch.
What is a roll stitch?
The rolled hem is a teeny tiny hemming technique that finishes all of the seam allowances inside the hem. It is suitable for use on light to medium weight fabrics and is wonderful on sheer fabrics due to the size and neat finish of the hem.
How to make a rolled hem?
Press the edge of the fabric⅛” to ¼” to the wrong side,depending on the width of the hemmer foot you’re using (see more about different width feet below).
Set up your sewing machine for a straight stitch.
Attach the Hemmer foot.
Place the fabric under the foot,wrong side up.
Before lowering the presser foot,fold over the pressed edge so the needle is even with the inner edge of the fold and the guide on the foot.
Lower the foot to hold the fabric in place. NOTE: If your sewing machine has a knee lift feature,now is a great time to use it so you don’t
Lower the needle into the fabric. The needle should be right at the inner fold of the fabric
Lift the pressure foot,but keep the needle down in the fabric.
Holding the edge of the fabric taut,insert the fold up and over into the guide of the foot.
Begin to sew,continuing to hold the fabric taut,but not too tight,allowing it to easily feed into the foot.

How to sew a rolled hem?
Place the fabric under the presser foot,with the edge of the fabric aligned with the edge of the foot.
Stitch a few stitches.
Raise the presser foot. Without cutting the threads,lift the fabric and pull the thread to get some slack. Move the threads to the back.
Lower the presser foot again. Hold onto the excess thread. This will give you something to grasp as you position the fabric.
Stitch slowly. As you stitch,make sure the edge of the fabric remains turned under the curve of the foot. This can be tricky and requires some practice.

Follow all the steps above but before starting to serge do the additional steps below.
Adjust the right needle tension to a 3.
Adjust the upper looper tension to a lower setting than lower looper (anything between 3 and 5 should work – please run tests before serging a final hem).
Adjust the lower looper tension to a higher setting than the upper looper tension (between 6 and 8). I used a 7 on my Brother serger.
