With picturesque architecture and beautiful weather, it’s a popular vacation destination for tourists from around the world. There are many reasons to love Seaside like delicious food, local restaurants and wonderful shops. We love exploring the area and learning more about its history.

The idea of Seaside started with the notion of reviving Northwest Florida’s building tradition, which had produced wood-frame cottages so well adapted to the climate that they enhanced the sensual pleasure of life by the sea. Cottages accommodated generations of family members, and kids got to sleep on the porch.

Seaside founder Robert Davis’ grandfather, J.S. Somlian, purchased the 80 acres the town rests on in 1946 for a family retreat. In 1978 the planning began for the first New Urban town; the goal was to make an old-fashioned beach town, with traditional wood-framed cottages indicative of the Florida Panhandle.

Towers are another omnipresent element throughout Seaside. If you could run out of film on a digital camera, trying to photograph all the towers here would probably do it. It is interesting to see how the different architects framed out the towers and worked them into the massing of the houses.

A very large part of what makes Seaside work as a vacation destination is that the beaches here are beautiful. Clean, white sand and a family oriented environment.
