EMMA PRESTON finds out how 23 years under Jonathan Denby’s ownership has shaped the venue. THE Newby Bridge Hotel is almost unrecognisable as the venue it was when it was taken over by owners Jonathan and Margaret Denby more than two decades ago.
How old is Newby Bridge?
It was built in 1793 by James Machel, whose family had been prominent in the area since the 12th Century when Ulf the Machel was the local laird. Newby Bridge Mansion was one of the first great houses to be built on the shores of Lake Windermere.

Most of the bed of Ullswater is owned by either the Dalemain Estates, The National Trust and the Lake District National Park Authority; most of the shoreline is privately owned, however there are various points around the lake where the launching of sailboards and small craft is allowed.
