Why does my heat only work on the highest setting?

Why does my heat only work on the highest setting?

The blower motor resistor is prone to shorts, corrosion, and overheating. When the resistor fails, typically, the highest setting is the only option that still functions. This is because the air from the blower motor is bypassing the resistor, thus gaining the maximum amount of voltage, resulting in full power.

What’s a blower motor resistor?

The blower motor resistor is responsible for controlling the blower motor speed. Each fan speed selection is connected to one or more of the resistors in the blower resistor assembly. The change in resistance controls the current through the blower motor, which in turn limits the speed that the blower motor spins at.

Why does my fan keep cutting out at high speed?

The voltage for the fan high speed by-passes the resistor block. This sounds more like a problem with high speed fan relay. On the low speeds, the fan relay routes the voltage thru the resistor block. When you switch to high fan speed, the relay switches over to supply full voltage from the battery to the fan motor. Tester is right.

Where is the resistor block on a Haynes fan?

It’ll be located on/in the ductwork by the blower motor. A Haynes repair manual will show you where it is. [b]It isn’t the resistor block. The voltage for the fan high speed by-passes the resistor block. This sounds more like a problem with high speed fan relay. On the low speeds, the fan relay routes the voltage thru the resistor block.

Does the heater have to have heat on every fan setting?

You just finished diagnosing and repairing your heater in your vehicle. You should now have heat on every fan setting. Tags: ATD, blower motor, fan switch, heat, heater, heater doesn’t work, heating, no heat, poor heat, Poor Heating, relay block, resistor, resistor block, sk, Tools

How do you test a fan resistor block?

Again you will ground the test light to a good ground and probe each one while moving the switch. The test light should light on every one and as you get to a higher fan speed it should light up brighter. If it doesn’t light up or you only have a high fan speed then your resistor block needs replacement since it is bypassed on high speed.
