Here are some of my problems with Mario Kart 64, aside from things like graphics: Drifting is extremely difficult and requires a very wide turn to pull off. Also, the resulting speed boost is negligible. Many of the tracks are poorly-designed, feel empty, and/or are filled with difficult turns.
