The flashing light just indicates the engine is reving to high to shift into gear. This can also happen from leaving the choke on too long. Leaving the choke on with a warmed up engine can cause a high idle and trip the flashing R light (ie RPMs too high to shift into gear). Also a misadjusted idle will do the same.
