Sir Leslie Charles Thiess (1909–1992), construction and mining industries entrepreneur, was born on 8 April 1909 at Drayton, near Toowoomba, Queensland, son of locally born parents Heinrich (Henry) Thiess, carpenter and farmer, and his wife Mary Paulina, née Rutsch.

Under his leadership, the company became a major contractor in Queensland and was the subject of an initial public offering on the Sydney and Brisbane Stock Exchanges in 1958.
